The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry is recruiting for a Forester IV (Fairbanks Area Forester) to oversee forest management on the 9.5 million acre Fairbanks Area in the interior of Alaska. The Fairbanks Area is a vast realm of boreal forest land stretching from the towering Alaska Range to the Yukon River. The city of Fairbanks (pop. 32,000) is the hub of this area and home to the main campus of the University of Alaska. Recreation opportunities abound on the public lands, rivers, trails, parks, and refuges that surround the city. The Fairbanks Area Forester will lead area staff in providing fire management and forest practices services for all non-federal lands within this immense area, and in conducting forest resource management, including timber sales and habitat enhancement, on state lands. Fairbanks experiences an active fire season, with recent fire seasons lasting from early- to mid-April through late-September or mid-October. The Fairbanks Area has an opportunity to help shape Alaska's strategy for addressing forest management challenges, including rapid changes in climate and fire regimes, introduction of invasive species, and shifts in economic conditions and energy sources. A competent and capable staff is an integral part of our daily operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

 planning and managing the Area's budgets.
 implementing programs for fire suppression, preparedness, forest management, forest practices, reforestation, cooperator projects, grants, CIPs, and RSAs.
 directly supervising the Fairbanks Area Administrative Assistant, the Area Resource Forester, and the Area Fire Management Officer while indirectly supervising 33 additional positions.
 on a rotating basis, serving as the Area Duty Officer during non-shift hours.
 depending on National Incident Management System, Incident Command System (NIMS ICS) qualifications, potentially serving as the agency liaison for Incident Management Teams hosted in the Fairbanks Area.
 promoting an active timber sale program.
 interacting with local agencies and the public regarding the Division of Forestry's programs.
 ensuring Area personnel follow statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures and have the ability to interpret these in making decisions.
 running multi-agency, wildland, and urban interface initial attack and fire suppression within areas of large population and significant resources at risk.
 acting as Agency Administrator and participating in Wildland Fire Decision Support System (WFDSS) preparation and implementation during extended attack fire management.
 working directly and through subordinates to implement and enforce the Forest Resources and Practices Act (FRPA) and regulations to ensure protection of fish habitat and water quality on state, municipal, trust, and private land.
 developing and revising forest management program work plans and goals for the Fairbanks Area.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE IS A MOTIVATED INDIVIDUAL WHO CAN DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE (The following traits must be documented in your cover letter and applicant profile.):

 Demonstrated experience with wildland fire operations and prevention, including urban interface and remote fires
 Knowledge of and/or experience with state forestry rules and regulations
 Experience with preparing, administering, or implementing a diverse budget across multiple programs
 Extensive field experience in timber sale unit design and layout
 Strong supervision and management skills, including the ability to successfully address multiple priorities, set work goals, and monitor staff progress to meet workload demands
 Experience with facilitating public process with the goal of reaching a consensus on difficult or complex issues among parties with divergent interests
 Experience coordinating with other agencies, public groups, and private individuals on timber sale planning, sale schedules, and forest management plans
 Strong oral (including listening) and written communication skills

We currently have a client looking to fill a position within their Support & Engineering services team as a Wood Processing Optimization Specialist. This person will analyze, test and calibrate installed optimization systems in sawmills and planer mills and function as the regional expert in optimization systems. The candidate will use their high level lumber grading expertise to guide the technical
expertise towards final calibration and customer approval and acceptance. The position will also provide ongoing trouble shooting, recalibration and other consulting expertise in the area of optimized lumber processing.

Responsibilities:

 Configure and test the installed optimization systems.
 Project manages the installation and commissioning of optimization systems in sawmills and planer mills.
 Evaluate the efficiency and the payback of systems.
 Compete the acceptance tests of systems.
 Visit of customers on a regular base to offer them technical expertise in a service role or as sales support.
 Offer customers service during regular hours as well as periodic 24 hour customer support.
 Provide initial and ongoing customer training.
 Create or complete documentation.

Qualifications:

 Bachelor of Science in Wood Products Processing.
 Expert level comprehension of wood processing.
 Excellent understanding of the standard grading rules for lumber.
 Meticulous attention to detail.
 Capacity to solve problems under pressure.
 Good communicator.
